Outside the Rain
08/03/07
She sits quietly… perched on a rock in the shade of small tree. It is not her chosen spot, but it will do for the moment. Hidden in this small copse of trees, she is invisible to the traffic that zips by on the street only a few feet away.
Easing back, she relaxes against the tree….moving ever so slightly, she finds a comfortable niche in the quiet of a summer afternoon. Embracing the peace that she has found, she closes her eyes. The soft warm breeze blows around her, carrying with it a multitude of small leaves which fall down to rest upon her momentarily before continuing their journey to the ground.
Raising one hand, she softly brushes the hair away from her face so that she can feel the breeze against her cheeks. On some small level, she notes that the breeze has cooled within the past few moments. Without opening her eyes, she tilts her head back just enough to catch a scent on the wind as she inhales deeply.
Rain….somewhere close.
She feels a single drop of wetness caress her cheek and lazily opens her eyes to discover that the sky has become gray with light summer clouds. The cooling breeze turns brisk and the soft music of falling leaves around her increases.
Gazing out, she notices that the pavement beyond her sanctuary has become slightly damp and decides to wander out of hiding to watch the rain.
Stepping out onto the sidewalk, she finds herself perched at the edge of a summer rain. Dry pavement where she stands…and wet pavement only a few steps away. She steps out carefully and crosses the street to enjoy this brief moment of small pleasure.
It will not be a heavy rain….only enough to refresh her soul….but it will be enough for now.
